Laila Zommers: Sisterhood

Hello! My name is Laila Zommers and I’m from Seattle, WA. I’m double majoring in Accounting and Business Administration (with a Finance concentration). I am the oldest of 3, and my younger sister (17) and younger brother (15) are my best friends! Joining Setons this year has truly been one of the best decisions I have EVER made. Outside of Setons, I am an active member in the Gonzaga Women in Business club. I love to cook, go on runs, hang out with friends, shop, and explore the Spokane coffee scene.                                            Out of our three pillars, I have resonated the most with Sisterhood as it’s the backbone of everything we do in Setons. Leadership and service could not thrive the same without it. Finding a group of like-minded women has been super beneficial in my college experience and my growth into the young woman I am today. Emilie Mentel - Service

Hi! My name is Emilie Mentel from Mount Vernon, WA, home of the famous tulip festivals in Skagit Valley. I am currently an Accounting major with a minor in French. From my first day at GU, I have been a member of our bulldog pep band showing my school spirit and love of sports. When I’m not focused on academics or social activities, you’ll likely find me swimming, painting, or baking—my favorite ways to unwind and recharge. Apart from my academics and goals, the most important values I hold are my relationships with my family - namely my three older siblings. The people I hold closest to my heart remain to always be my three older siblings where being in the same room all together is no longer something I take for granted. Setons has provided me with countless opportunities to form some amazing lasting relations with others while giving back to the city’s numerous communities.

During our youth, my family spent frequent time engaging in our community through service. These volunteering activities varied from volunteering for Catholic youth camps, packaging and handing out food at our local food bank, or getting a building prepped to house low-income/homeless individuals/families. Service has always been a central part of my life, whether through school or faith. This deeply influenced my decision to choose Gonzaga for its wealth of service opportunities, which also motivated me to join the Setons. As a member of the Setons, I have volunteered with many local communities to provide support in whatever ways they need. My weekly service location with the Setons works to support neurodivergent children to connect with one another and the community. Sharing laughter, engaging in conversations, and playing games while bringing smiles to their faces has become a meaningful highlight of my weeks. What I love most about serving with the Setons—and service in general—is the opportunity to make a positive impact on others. It’s a fulfilling experience knowing you may have just made someone’s day a little better. Service brings me joy to give back and brighten others' days, especially when they might feel they have little reason to smile. It is an essential part of who I am.
