Sarah Grassel: Service

Hi everyone! My name is Sarah Grassel and I’m a Biology major with a Spanish minor. I’m from Corvallis, Oregon, and have lived my whole life in the Pacific Northwest. Because of this, I’ve developed a love of the outdoors, especially of hiking, biking, and paddle boarding (and also coffee of course). I love to go on walks, especially on the beach, and like to read, bake, play piano, swim, and spend time with friends and family. At Gonzaga, I’m involved in campus ministry and work as a tutor in math and chemistry, and, of course, I am a Seton. Coming to Gonzaga, I knew I wanted to find a community that valued service and connection. Service has always been an important part of my life. Through volunteering, I’ve gotten to meet so many people from different walks of life while working on various projects. I believe serving others is essential to living a flourishing life. It’s an act of love and humility, recognizing the gifts one has received and working for and with others in gratitude...

ABOUT US

The Setons of Gonzaga is a service organization composed of 30 amazing women who actively serve the Spokane community under the three pillars of service, sisterhood, and leadership. During the year, Setons participate in monthly service at different organizations throughout Spokane. These services can range anywhere from leaf raking, writing letters and cards, serving at shelters, and so on. Monthly service creates an opportunity for all 30 of us to serve at the same time together. In addition, each week Setons are broken down into smaller groups to perform weekly service at organizations that we work with all semester long. Fall 2023, a few groups worked at the Boys and Girls Club of Spokane and a couple of groups were at the Hutton Settlement Children's Home.

Additionally, Setons are well known for hosting the annual Charity Ball event where all students on campus are welcome to attend in order to raise money to donate to an organization of our choice. This year we are supporting Sally's House Emergency Foster Care. Essentially, the Setons of Gonzaga create an atmosphere where women can serve the community, support one another, grow in leadership, and gain 29 other sisters while doing so!
