Mary Maidment: Service

Hi! My name is Mary Maidment and I am from Portland, Oregon. I am studying neuroscience with a minor in psychology on the pre-med track. On campus, I work as an events assistant and as an Ambassador, frequently giving tours. When I have free time, I love to be outside hiking, shopping, intramural sports, workout classes, and spending time with friends. This year, my team won our softball and volleyball intramural championships!! I have been busy watching the new Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season and just finished Scandal. What drew me to Setons was the Service pillar. Since I was young, my family has made an effort to be actively involved in different forms of service in our community. We spent time at our church, local food bank, community garden, and my favorite was making clothing bags for children in need. I loved picking outfits and giving toys, games, and other activities. The Gonzaga community reflects this deeply ingrained value I have, which is the importance of service and ...

Kat Franklin: Service

Howdy y’all! My Name is Kat Franklin and I’m from La Cañada Flintridge, California. I am double majoring in Economics and Applied Mathematics with a concentration in Actuarial Sciences. I am also minoring in Leadership Studies with the Comprehensive Leadership Program. I have started studying for the Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) exams this year and I am so excited to start working towards my Actuary Certifications! I am one of the Selections Chairs in Setons and have been on the executive board since April 2023. Outside of Setons, I am a Resident Assistant in Welch Hall and a Women in Math Club member. I also love to keep up with Gordon Ramsey’s Hell’s Kitchen and bake new things.
The pillar I have chosen to reflect on is service. I started my time in Setons as a co-chair of Service and held that position until November. This position gave me a new appreciation for creating intentional moments at our service placements and events. I spent time talking to people who run the organizations that the Setons are lucky enough to volunteer with. Hearing their stories opened my eyes to our impact in the community. My favorite part of being a service chair was organizing the monthly service events. As Setons, we are committed to two hours of monthly service on top of our weekly obligations. These monthly events have ranged from yard clean-ups to helping at the Light the Way Gala and they are always a blast. The Light the Way Gala is the largest fundraising event for the Childhood Cancer Coalition, and the Setons help by selling raffle tickets and helping this magnificent event run. I stayed through the entire event this year and got to hear stories from families that had benefited from the Childhood Cancer Coalition’s work and the lasting impact it has had on their families. I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve at events like the Light the Way Gala and I have loved every minute of weekly and monthly service events in my time as a Seton.
