Mary Maidment: Service

Hi! My name is Mary Maidment and I am from Portland, Oregon. I am studying neuroscience with a minor in psychology on the pre-med track. On campus, I work as an events assistant and as an Ambassador, frequently giving tours. When I have free time, I love to be outside hiking, shopping, intramural sports, workout classes, and spending time with friends. This year, my team won our softball and volleyball intramural championships!! I have been busy watching the new Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season and just finished Scandal. What drew me to Setons was the Service pillar. Since I was young, my family has made an effort to be actively involved in different forms of service in our community. We spent time at our church, local food bank, community garden, and my favorite was making clothing bags for children in need. I loved picking outfits and giving toys, games, and other activities. The Gonzaga community reflects this deeply ingrained value I have, which is the importance of service and ...

Emily Provolt: Service

Hi! My name is Emily Provolt. I am from Longview, WA where I live with my parents, twin sister and our family dog! I am currently a Criminology and Dance double major with a minor in psychology here at Gonzaga. My majors are really different, but they are both so rewarding to me, I am actually a pre-law student who hopes to attend Gonzaga law after I graduate! My dance major is a great way for me to continue exploring my passion for dance and once I graduate, I hope to teach dance classes in my free time. Some of my hobbies include reading, spending time with friends, and cooking. I also work in the center for student involvement, where I help other students and clubs’ function smoothly! I am so thankful for all of the opportunities that Setons has given me this year and can’t wait for what is still to come.
The pillar that I have found the most impactful to me setons experience is service. Service is a big part of our club and having both weekly service in small groups and monthly service as a whole club has allowed me to connect with my sisters while doing meaningful work to help the greater Spokane community. This semester my weekly service placement is at the Hutton Settlement where I work as a tutor to some of the children who live there. I have really enjoyed this so far because it has allowed me to form relationships with the students that I am tutoring and to help them succeed in schoolwork that they had struggled with in the past. One of the monthly service events that has really impacted me this year was when we worked at a local father daughter dance to help raise money for the Mead school district. I grew up in a small town where our school district didn’t have as many opportunities as other due to financial strain and being able to help raise money for schools is something that I find really important. Service as a whole is something that I have always enjoyed but in becoming a Seton I have developed a deeper understanding of its importance.
