Eleanor Johnson: Service

Hi! My name is Eleanor Johnson, and I am from Snohomish, Washington. I am majoring in Accounting and Business Administration with a concentration in Management Information Systems and have a minor in dance. Outside of class I work with Campus Kitchens, a program on campus that takes leftover food from campus dining to cook warm meals that are then served to Gonzaga Family Haven and O’Malley Senior Center. Along with Setons I am apart of Women in Business, Beta Alpha Psi, and the involved in the Gonzaga dance program. In my free time I like to read, get coffee, take workout classes, and watch Gilmore Girls.   I joined Girl Scouts in first grade and ever since, Service has been extremely important to me and something I strive to keep a part of my life. Growing up in Girl Scouts allowed me to recognize the importance of helping those in my community from an early age and has ultimately led me to be the person I am today. Service was the pillar that drove me to join Setons, and I’m so ...

Katherine McBee: Service

Hi there! My name is Katherine McBee and I am from Portland, Oregon! I am a Psychology major, Biology minor, as well as on the Pre-Health track– with the plan to go to med school and become a psychiatrist working in childhood development in the future. Along with being a part of Setons, I love getting involved on campus; I am the Secretary and Treasurer of The Book Club, as well as a member of Craft club and Board Game club, and I also work part-time on campus! In my free time I love to bake, read, crochet, and spend time with friends– either watching movies and tv shows, getting coffee, or just talking! Setons has been such a joyous part of my year, and I am so grateful I get to serve the Gonzaga community, and bond with 29 amazing girls in the process.

Community Service has always been a big part of my life, so when I learned about Setons, I was thankful to have a chance to gain more access and connection to service opportunities, especially in Spokane and around Gonzaga. This past semester I was part of a group that volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club every Friday, where we would spend time with the kids– playing games, helping with homework, and chatting. Getting to build a connection with the kids really opened my eyes to a fresh perspective. While we didn’t change the kids’ lives in an immense way, we were there when they needed us: whether that be to help with long division or color in a drawing. This experience emphasized how much community service is an immense opportunity to show what an environment really means to you. I learned that by reaching out and helping with the little stuff, we are able to let communities thrive. Volunteering to me will always be significant because it is a cyclical process. When someone volunteers in their community, they make a difference, which in turn affects them. While this might be a selfish motive, it is so rewarding to be able to have a role in this cycle through Setons and claim a part in improving my community and hopefully inspiring others to do the same!
