Sarah Grassel: Service

Hi everyone! My name is Sarah Grassel and I’m a Biology major with a Spanish minor. I’m from Corvallis, Oregon, and have lived my whole life in the Pacific Northwest. Because of this, I’ve developed a love of the outdoors, especially of hiking, biking, and paddle boarding (and also coffee of course). I love to go on walks, especially on the beach, and like to read, bake, play piano, swim, and spend time with friends and family. At Gonzaga, I’m involved in campus ministry and work as a tutor in math and chemistry, and, of course, I am a Seton. Coming to Gonzaga, I knew I wanted to find a community that valued service and connection. Service has always been an important part of my life. Through volunteering, I’ve gotten to meet so many people from different walks of life while working on various projects. I believe serving others is essential to living a flourishing life. It’s an act of love and humility, recognizing the gifts one has received and working for and with others in gratitude...

Julia Kavalieros- Spokanimal

Hello!
My name is Julia Kavalieros and this week my group had the opportunity to serve at Spokanimal. Spokanimal is a cat and dog shelter only ten minutes from campus, and volunteers are given the opportunity to work with animals looking to be adopted. This week I primarily worked with dogs, including one six-month-old puppy name Gobstopper! All the dogs were eager to go on walks and play with us. The first dog I took care of was named Flower. Flower is a five-year-old Pitbull who loved to pull me around and show me her favorite digging spots. She was pretty shy at first, but by the end of our thirty-minute walk she had warmed up to me by licking my face and wanting to cuddle in the grass. Next, we had Kaleb. Kaleb is a year old Australian Cattle Dog mix who had enough energy to power a whole city. We ran around the large field and played fetch for most of our time together. Kaleb's favorite thing to do besides play fetch was squirming around in the mini baby pool. Kaleb and Flower are roommates in the kennel, and although they do not typically mix the dogs together, both were excited to see each other. Finally, there was Gobstopper. Gobstopper was taken care of by another Seton named Sam for the entirety of service that day. Gobstopper was shy at first but eventually learned to trust us and loved to cuddle up with people. By the next week, Gobstopper found his forever home. Serving at Spokanimal is one of the most rewarding things I have done in a while, and I’ve only been there twice! I definitely have puppy fever thanks to Spokanimal and I am looking forward to the next two months I have at the shelter.
