Eleanor Johnson: Service

Hi! My name is Eleanor Johnson, and I am from Snohomish, Washington. I am majoring in Accounting and Business Administration with a concentration in Management Information Systems and have a minor in dance. Outside of class I work with Campus Kitchens, a program on campus that takes leftover food from campus dining to cook warm meals that are then served to Gonzaga Family Haven and O’Malley Senior Center. Along with Setons I am apart of Women in Business, Beta Alpha Psi, and the involved in the Gonzaga dance program. In my free time I like to read, get coffee, take workout classes, and watch Gilmore Girls.   I joined Girl Scouts in first grade and ever since, Service has been extremely important to me and something I strive to keep a part of my life. Growing up in Girl Scouts allowed me to recognize the importance of helping those in my community from an early age and has ultimately led me to be the person I am today. Service was the pillar that drove me to join Setons, and I’m so ...

Mairead Polverino: Sisterhood

Hello Hello! My name is Maireád (like Parade with an M) Polverino and I am one of the 2022-2023 setons this year. I am double majoring in Spanish and Psychology with a minor in Leadership. Home for me is San Jose California, which is about an hour south of San Francisco without traffic. In Setons I hold the role of one of the two Charity Ball Chairs, which has been a truly amazing experience. When I am not in class or studying, you can usually find me working out, reading, working on campus, or feeding my caffeine addiction. At home, my favorite things to do are watching the sunsets on the beach or taking night drives with my friends, both of which are a bit hard to do here in Spokane. However, what is not hard is feeling the love and support I have received over the past few months from these new thirty girls I can now proudly call my sisters!
I am an only child, therefore making friends is more of a survival tactic than a luxury. In the beginning, I was so nervous about joining Setons, having gone to an all-girls school for high school; putting thirty girls together for multiple hours at a time is a prime spot for drama. I had a lot of trouble making friends my freshman year, yet with my apprehension, I took the jump; am forever thankful I did. Over the course of this year, I have been able to watch as our class has moved from the safety net of those who we knew, and have come together as one family. The sisters I never had. It took some time, but from the laughs and stories told on drives up to socials or service and the long meetings (especially when voting was involved) I have never looked forward to 9 pm Wednesday nights so much. Recently, we had Charity Ball to help the women and children at Transitions. Now all of the lead-up and preparation showed how well we all work as a team, but my favorite moments were all of us dancing on the stage together. I was surrounded by young women who will change the world tomorrow or the next, but in that single moment, we were just girls screaming our hearts out to ABBA and bonding over the newfound connections that will last us a lifetime. Junior year I plan to go abroad both semesters, and although I will miss weekly service and signing our little song together; the times I will miss most are those hugs in Hemmingson, the similes on the way to class, and the feeling that I am never truly facing the world alone because I will always have my sisters behind me. I have my family and it is here with my sisters; together let’s take on the world!
