Sarah Grassel: Service

Hi everyone! My name is Sarah Grassel and I’m a Biology major with a Spanish minor. I’m from Corvallis, Oregon, and have lived my whole life in the Pacific Northwest. Because of this, I’ve developed a love of the outdoors, especially of hiking, biking, and paddle boarding (and also coffee of course). I love to go on walks, especially on the beach, and like to read, bake, play piano, swim, and spend time with friends and family. At Gonzaga, I’m involved in campus ministry and work as a tutor in math and chemistry, and, of course, I am a Seton. Coming to Gonzaga, I knew I wanted to find a community that valued service and connection. Service has always been an important part of my life. Through volunteering, I’ve gotten to meet so many people from different walks of life while working on various projects. I believe serving others is essential to living a flourishing life. It’s an act of love and humility, recognizing the gifts one has received and working for and with others in gratitude...

Jessie Wymer- Leadership

Hello everyone!
Something unique about Setons that I wanted to talk about is that we are an organization where over half the members hold leadership positions. Often the leaders are the minority in a group, but Setons is an exception to this. I have had the opportunity to serve as Treasurer so far this year and it has pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way. I haven’t been one to seek out leadership positions in the past, but I decided that I wanted to be more invested in all three pillars of Setons (leadership, service, and sisterhood), and holding a position would allow me to develop my leadership skills throughout this year. Serving as Treasurer has taught me the importance of budgeting and has placed me in positions where
I have to make decisions that will help us to stick to the budget. It has taken some adjusting and learning, but I am extremely glad that I ran for this position last spring.
What sets Setons apart from clubs that I have been a part of in the past is that its members are actually in control of everything that goes on, not our advisor. This is an interesting dynamic to have because it forces us to really work through problems instead of turning to an adult for help. Because of this, I have learned how important it is to understand all of the logistics we need to take care of because there are always more to figure out than we originally think. It has been interesting to attend our executive meetings and see how certain jobs are delegated to and shared among the leaders of Setons. I have also learned that it’s not a bad thing to challenge the ideas of others of have them challenge yours, because in doing so you are able to foresee any future problems you could have and solve them before they arise.
I have really enjoyed this year so far and I’m excited for the year ahead with my sisters!
