Mary Maidment: Service

Hi! My name is Mary Maidment and I am from Portland, Oregon. I am studying neuroscience with a minor in psychology on the pre-med track. On campus, I work as an events assistant and as an Ambassador, frequently giving tours. When I have free time, I love to be outside hiking, shopping, intramural sports, workout classes, and spending time with friends. This year, my team won our softball and volleyball intramural championships!! I have been busy watching the new Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season and just finished Scandal. What drew me to Setons was the Service pillar. Since I was young, my family has made an effort to be actively involved in different forms of service in our community. We spent time at our church, local food bank, community garden, and my favorite was making clothing bags for children in need. I loved picking outfits and giving toys, games, and other activities. Isabelle Fleming: Service

Hello! I’m Isabelle Fleming, a nursing major from Maryland. My parents moved to a small farm last year so now my family has grown from just my parents, twin sister and I to include 9 chickens, 3 goats, and soon 2 sheep and a horse! I have always been active and when the weather’s nice here I love to run on Centennial Trail or play pickleball. I am grateful to be a part of the 23-24 Setons as watching each girl grow in her love of service and the Spokane community has been the best part of my sophomore year.

Service was a large part of my life in high school since we were required to complete 100 hrs every year. At the time I thought that was very unfair and an extremely high load to add on to the work of high school and playing a sport. However, it shaped me to consider service as a priority alongside my school work and wellness. Freshman year at Gonzaga, I wanted to continue being deeply involved in service, but I didn’t know where to start and often felt that I wasn’t truly connecting with or bettering Spokane. I knew I wanted to do something different my sophomore year and that’s a large part of why I applied to Setons. I’m happy to say that Setons has connected me with service opportunities that lift my spirits and give me purpose in my daily life. Forming personal relationships at each of my service placements reinforced the impact that service can have on not only the community, but also on myself, allowing me to learn more about myself and the kind of person I want to be. Service has also been a conduit for deeper connections with the other girls, as serving alongside each other is an incredible experience that demonstrates the importance of the shared values Setons instills in each of us.
