Mary Maidment: Service

Hi! My name is Mary Maidment and I am from Portland, Oregon. I am studying neuroscience with a minor in psychology on the pre-med track. On campus, I work as an events assistant and as an Ambassador, frequently giving tours. When I have free time, I love to be outside hiking, shopping, intramural sports, workout classes, and spending time with friends. This year, my team won our softball and volleyball intramural championships!! I have been busy watching the new Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season and just finished Scandal. What drew me to Setons was the Service pillar. Since I was young, my family has made an effort to be actively involved in different forms of service in our community. We spent time at our church, local food bank, community garden, and my favorite was making clothing bags for children in need. I loved picking outfits and giving toys, games, and other activities. Artisans Reflection: Nate Long

Meeting up with Buddy every Thursday for a few hours is always the highlight of my week. In my opinion, Bud and I are the perfect match for the mentor/mentee relationship. We both love sports, super heroes, and making money. The first thing he tells me when I see him each week is “I got paid this week, so I’m going to have my limo pretty soon.” We always talk about hopefully someday getting a limo and showing up to the Gonzaga basketball games in style.

Buddy’s everyday attitude has taught me a lot about how to look at life. He doesn’t let his daily problems or stresses affect his mood. He always shows up to Artisans with a great attitude and is continually pleasant to be around. Buddy’s also one of the most caring and kind individuals I’ve ever met. From the first time we met each other, he has put others before himself. He always asks how others are doing and how school is going. Buddy’s compassion towards others and love for life has taught me a lot and is something that I want to be able to implement in my own life. Buddy’s selfless ways and kindness truly know how to put a smile on my face each and every week I get to see him.

Bud and I have grown really close over this past year. We’ve done a ton of activities like going to the Chiefs hockey game, bowling, making tacos, and just relaxing and coloring pictures of his favorite NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles. While Knights and Setons is coming to a close for the Class of 2017, I don’t want my relationship with Buddy to end. I’m going to continue to visit him next year and hopefully for as long as I possibly can. Buddy’s one of the greatest guys that I have ever met, and I want our friendship to keep on growing.
