Eleanor Johnson: Service

Hi! My name is Eleanor Johnson, and I am from Snohomish, Washington. I am majoring in Accounting and Business Administration with a concentration in Management Information Systems and have a minor in dance. Outside of class I work with Campus Kitchens, a program on campus that takes leftover food from campus dining to cook warm meals that are then served to Gonzaga Family Haven and O’Malley Senior Center. Along with Setons I am apart of Women in Business, Beta Alpha Psi, and the involved in the Gonzaga dance program. In my free time I like to read, get coffee, take workout classes, and watch Gilmore Girls.   I joined Girl Scouts in first grade and ever since, Service has been extremely important to me and something I strive to keep a part of my life. Growing up in Girl Scouts allowed me to recognize the importance of helping those in my community from an early age and has ultimately led me to be the person I am today. Service Reflection: Nick Joyce


I love the pumpkin patch. I always have. However, I was curious to see if my mentee would share the same love for the pumpkin patch as me and he did.

As soon as we boarded the bus, I could tell it was going to be a great day. The mentees were filled with energy. They could hardly stay in their seats. I saw my mentee right away and he motioned for me to come over to him. He smiled at me and said with a huge grin “we going to the pumpkin patch today boy”.

As soon as we arrived at the pumpkin patch I knew it was going to be an awesome day. We made our way to the corn maze first. My mentee casually made his way to the front of our group and started leading us through the corn maze. This was a humbling moment for me. I could see that we were going the wrong way on several occasions, but I kept silent and followed. We would get to a dead end laughing at our mistake and turn around and look for the right way. Along with this, it was really cool to watch my mentee figure out the right way to get through the maze. I never knew getting lost could be such a blast! As I walked through the maze I remember the old saying that it’s not the destination that’s important, but the journey.
My mentee was laughing and smiling the whole day. He didn’t care that we were lost in the corn maze because he was having fun. So this week what I took away from a trip to the pumpkin patch, is not to worry too much about the destination, just have fun and enjoy the journey.
